2007 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities

The Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, sponsored by NEH and established in 1972, is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the federal government for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities.

Harvey Mansfield, PhD, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Government at Harvard, delivered the 36th Jefferson Lecture on the evening of May 8, 2007, entitled “How to Understand Politics: What the Humanities Can Say to Science”.

Remarks were also given by the Honorable Bruce Cole, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and General David Grange, President and CEO of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, the principle supporter of the 2007 Jefferson Lecture.

The National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent federal agency, was created in 1965 to support learning in the humanities such as history, literature, and philosophy. NEH awards grants to support programs that enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of the humanities in classrooms, public libraries, community spaces and the media.
