(Washington DC) The United States Deaf Golf Association (USDGA) in
conjunction with the McDonald’s LPGA Championship presented by Coca
Cola®, announces the first ever golf camp for deaf girls, June 7, 2006. The
event will bring young ladies from the Maryland School for the Deaf to
Mountain Branch Golf Club for a private golf clinic conducted by 4 LPGA
Tour Professionals and hosted by former Touring Professional and Deaf
Golf Instructor Rob Strano. The clinic will begin at 9:30 and be followed
immediately by a golf camp for the girls. Then in the afternoon, the young
ladies will visit Bulle Rock golf course, host site for the tournament, and
tour the golf course and see a major championship venue.
The event will be conducted completely in American Sign Language. Each LPGA player will present a 15-20 minute clinic on a specific part of the
game (short shots, middle irons, fairway woods/hybrid and driver) and then
spend a few minutes with the girls for photos and autographs. After the
clinic is finished there will be a short golf camp for the girls taught by Mr.
Strano. During that session each girl will learn the golf swing using the
special visual program that is used at all the United States Deaf Golf Camps.
LPGA players scheduled to appear: Katherine Hull, Catherine Cartwright, Kris Tschetter, Katie Futcher.
This event is one of 18 deaf golf camps that comprise the United States Deaf
Golf Camp Network. A program of the USDGA, these events introduce the
game of golf to deaf children across America, completely in Sign Language.
The camps are free for the children in attendance thanks to corporate and
private support. Sponsors for this event are:
Shockley Honda
Maryland School for the Deaf Foundation
The camp director and lead instructor is Mr. Rob Strano. He played
competitive golf for 15 years with experience on the PGA and Nationwide
Tours. Three years ago he began the process of learning Sign Language with
the goal of bringing quality golf instruction to the Deaf Community in their
own language. He can be contacted at: 443.404.8811
